Lava Point Campground in Zion National Park offers 6 primitive tent and small RV (<19′) camping sites. Located off Kolob Terrace Road at the top near the overlook of Zion Canyon. Hiking trails leave from this area. The access road is a graded dirt road (1.5 miles from pavement). A pit toilet is available. Sites are free and on a first come first served basis. Situated in and around a pine forest the elevation affords cool temperatures. Excellent hiking and biking in this area.

Lava Point Campground, nestled within Zion National Park in Utah, is a spectacular camping destination that offers a unique and unforgettable outdoor experience.

Located at an elevation of 7,890 feet (2,405 meters), Lava Point Campground provides a serene and secluded setting for campers seeking tranquility and natural beauty. With only six primitive campsites available, this campground offers a more intimate camping experience compared to the larger campgrounds in Zion National Park. Each campsite provides a picnic table and fire ring, allowing campers to enjoy meals and gather around the campfire in the midst of nature.

One of the main attractions of Lava Point Campground is its proximity to breathtaking views of Zion National Park and the surrounding landscapes. From Lava Point, you can witness panoramic vistas of deep canyons, towering sandstone cliffs, and the dramatic rock formations that define the park. This makes it an ideal spot for stargazing, as the campground’s high elevation and limited light pollution provide optimal conditions for observing the night sky.

As Lava Point Campground is located away from the hustle and bustle of the main areas of Zion National Park, it offers a sense of solitude and a chance to connect with nature on a deeper level. The campground serves as a starting point for various hiking trails, including the popular and challenging Kolob Arch Trail. This trail takes you through diverse landscapes, culminating in a rewarding view of one of the world’s largest natural arches.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunities for spotting diverse animal species in and around Lava Point Campground. Mule deer, squirrels, and a variety of bird species can often be observed in the surrounding forests and meadows. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive California condor, one of the rarest bird species in North America, as it occasionally soars overhead.

While Lava Point Campground does not offer the same amenities as the larger campgrounds in Zion National Park, such as flush toilets or running water, it provides a unique camping experience for those seeking a more rustic and secluded adventure. Campers should come prepared with their own water and supplies, and be mindful of Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the natural beauty of the area.

In addition to camping, Lava Point serves as a day-use area, allowing visitors to stop by and take in the magnificent views even if they are not camping overnight. It is a peaceful spot to relax, have a picnic, and soak in the breathtaking surroundings.

Lava Point Campground in Zion National Park offers a tranquil and awe-inspiring camping experience amidst the stunning landscapes of southern Utah. Whether you are seeking solitude, panoramic views, or an escape from the crowds, this campground provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Zion National Park.
